Skye doesn’t just have incredible landscapes, it also offers the opportunity for amazing wildlife encounters. We can take you to locations where eagles rule the skies, or where otters feed along the shore. Trips are at least 6 hours long and are run by team member Harry who is a zoologist and an expert in bird and wildlife photography. Due to the subjects being totally wild, no guarantee can be made to ensure a sighting, but we have recently been running at a success rate of 85% for eagles and 60% for otters. You will need a long lens to get the most out of this trip, but if you don’t have your own we have suitable equipment for hire. Customers booked on our eagle/otter experience receive a 25% discount on all hire prices. We like to be as fair as possible, so if you don’t end up using any equipment hired, you won’t be charged.
Golden eagles are the main target on most of our eagle experiences. With over 30 pairs, the Isle of Skye has probably the highest density of this species anywhere in Scotland, making it one of the best places to be able to get close enough to them for a decent shot. A good level of fitness is needed as we generally aim to climb up onto some of Skye’s ridge-lines; getting up into the eagle’s world gives us a better chance of close encounters and of course better photographs.
The Isle of Skye, like many of Scotland’s islands, has a healthy population of otters around its coastline. Unlike otters that primarily live in freshwater, otters which live and feed in the sea and along the shoreline can be active throughout the day. Coupled with the right field skills in order to get close means you can get some wonderfully intimate photographs of these shy and elusive creatures. They are notoriously difficult to find so a good dose of patience is required to be in with a chance of spotting these incredible mammals.
Price of £220 is a total cost for up to 2 people. Please add £20 per person for more than 2 people (max 4). A £50 deposit per day is required to place a booking. In rare situations where the weather is too bad for the trip to go ahead, a full refund of deposit will be offered if an alternative day cannot be scheduled.
Binoculars are an essential piece of kit for helping to spot wildlife at a distance, distinguishing between an eagle or a raven, a seal or an otter. If you don't have your own we have a couple of pairs available to rent, with all the money received being donated to British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) - a charity that helps stranded, injured or ill marine animals. Team members Harry & Niki are both trained marine mammal medics and regularly respond to callouts to help the wildlife around the coastline of Skye. Binoculars are available to rent at £5 for the day, and if you'd like to use them for the duration of your time on Skye a discount is available for multiple days.
